Volatiles
Gases, ices, solvents, and reactive compounds harvested from atmospheric or cryogenic stellar objects. The primary raw input for fuel production. Holdings that lack access to Volatiles cannot sustain fleet operations independently.
Tier
Tier 1 — Extraction. Produced directly from the stellar object's composition. Requires no external resource inputs to operate.
Source Objects
Volatiles occur on bodies with thick atmospheres, icy crusts, or cryo-chemical compositions:
- Gas giants
- Ice worlds
- Comet fields
- Frozen outer-system moons
These object types tend to be inhospitable to colonization, making Volatiles-producing holdings low in population but high in strategic value. Expect them to be pure extraction outposts rather than developed colonies.
Produced By
An Extraction Sector on any holding with a non-zero Volatiles occurrence rating.
Output rate per cycle = base extraction rate × occurrence rating × sector level.
Consumed By
- Fuel production (Tier 2) — Volatiles are the raw input for fuel processing sectors
Strategic Notes
Volatiles and Structural Materials come from fundamentally different object types. A player whose territory is rich in rocky planets but sparse in gas giants will have easy alloy production but struggle to fuel their fleet without trade or conquest. The reverse is also true.
This asymmetry is intentional. No single system or region should be self-sufficient across both chains.
Because Volatiles sources tend to be specialized extraction outposts with limited slot count and weak defensive development, they are difficult to defend in depth and relatively easy to raid or blockade. Disrupting an opponent's Volatiles supply directly attacks their fleet's operational range.
Open Questions
- Should Volatiles be extractable from gas giants requiring a specialized orbital extraction method, distinct from standard planetary surface extraction?
- Are cometary and ice-world Volatiles the same resource type as gas giant Volatiles, or are they separate subtypes that merge at the processing stage?
